This was a small, dark dining room that had been fighting its own proportions for years. Rather than lighten it, we leaned in — walls, trim and ceiling carried in one deep, gray-leaning plum so the corners dissolve and the room reads as a single enveloping volume.
Color drenching only works when the sheen is planned. Walls were taken in a flat, chalky finish that absorbs the low evening light; trim and the window surround were run one step up in sheen so the architecture still catches a little reflection after dark. A deep pigment like this wants a tinted primer and two honest coats — skip either and the finish will flash and patch under lamplight.
The furnishings were kept warm and slightly aged: an oak table, rush seats, unlined linen at the window. Brass and candlelight do the rest of the work. In daylight the room reads brown-violet and quiet; after six it turns almost black, and that is exactly the point.
The lesson we take into every project here: a small dark room does not need to be made bright. It needs to be made intentional.
Project story
06 photographs

01 · Dining, evening
A deep application of Shadowed Plum creates a dark, violet-brown atmosphere that recedes into near black under soft candlelight.

02 · Adjoining living room
Unlined linen and brass accents sit against a neutral backdrop of Warm Chalk, offering a soft transition between living spaces.

03 · Color study
Hand-painted swatches of Dried Clay and Smoked Olive illustrate the tonal balance between the project's textiles and the built-in cabinetry.

04 · The adjoining hall
The hall is carried in Warm Chalk, so the doorway into the dining room reads as a threshold — light stepping straight into shadow.

05 · Evening, table detail
After dark, the flat walls give everything to the candlelight. Brass is the only sheen in the room — and it is enough.

06 · The built-in
The built-in's interior is painted Smoked Olive, a quieter note against the plum, so the ceramics and books do the talking.
